[FAR Scholarships]: September 1st- Day of Knowledge.

September 2, 2010

By Levon Lachikyan

September 1st is marked as the start of academic year at all schools of the Republic of Armenia. The day is widely celebrated here as a Day of Knowledge.

This is the time when President of the Republic of Armenia hosts the country’s most outstanding students, 34 medal recipients for 2009-2010 academic year from Armenia’s schools and winners of international Olympiads. On occasion of the Knowledge Day, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians also hosted the teachers of Armenia’s educational institutions, in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, and gave them His blessings.

This year, 201 schools of Yerevan welcome nearly 9700 first – year schoolchildren. The total number of first-year schoolchildren all over Armenia amounts to 37400. As festive the first day of September is, we are also registering the continuous decline in the number of first graders – year after year.

Public and non-profit organizations, NGOs present school bags and stationary to the schoolchildren from socially vulnerable families. Moreover, the police officers provide security and traffic control in the neighborhoods of schools, on September 1-10.

Fund for Armenian Relief also contributes to this national holiday. The capital renovation s of Gyumri Ounjian school’s sub-building is well under way to its completion. The other FAR-supported schools, Gyumri Vazgen A school, Vanadzor Anoosh Mathevosian school and the Hovhannes Hintliyan school in Gayan Avan open their doors on the Day of Knowledge to welcome students after a long and hot summer. Students of the Gyumri Octet School are still starting 2010 academic year in ‘domiks’. But they too see the light at the end of the tunnel: new, vigorous efforts are being made to raise funds for its rebuilding.

More than 300 students, beneficiaries of FAR Scholarship programs, will start the new academic year with hope and enthusiasm for the future. In 2010 two new Scholarship Programs are established by FAR that would benefit talented students pursuing journalistic and public service careers:: “Margaret Ahnert Ajemian” and “Garabed and Armine Zambak” Scholarships.

FAR congratulates its beneficiary schoolchildren and students on September 1st and wishes all of them a successful academic year full of interesting, rich discoveries and achievements.
